I am new to this site and not sure how yet to navigate and find old posts. Actually, pretty new to bbq period. I have been looking to purchase a charcoal smoker and have been looking at the weber summit. It seems a bit expensive, but maybe worth the money. Does anyone have experience with this unit ? If so, what are the pros and cons ? Any info on it and other charcoal grills would be appreciated.

Will be smoking mostly brisket, ribs, and turkeys, but at times I would maybe like to do steaks and links etc.

Thanks in advance...

Big Welcome, The Weber Summit is nice but for the same money you can get a nice Weber kettle plus a Weber Smokey Mountain and still have some serious change left over. My two cents.

Thanks for the welcome and the input. So the weber smokey mountain can do pretty much the same as the summit ? I have a master built electric, but it only reaches 275degree and certain things it does not work well. Not that I will be cooking Pizza or anything but would like to reach some higher temps. Also about the weber summit verses smokey mountain,Is the ratio of charcoal usage during a long cook similar ?

I mainly use my WSM for cooking competion chicken at 350. This is achieved by removing the water pan. If you are wanting to grill burgers or steaks at higher temps, I would use a regular kettle at least the 22 model or going a bit bigger to the 26 model. I have a 22 inch kettle and have cooked everything but a brisket on it.The Summitt is nice but I just can't see paying that much for it. I would also look at purchasing a set of grill grates for the kettle to make the best steaks ever. Also look at the weber forumn for additional info.

Jumping off the tracks, but take a look at the PK360 grill. Excellent indirect grilling/smoking and can get up to 400-500 deg easily.

You should watch Baby Back Maniac's youtube channel, he does a video to compare cookers and the Weber surpasses them all including BGE and Kamado Joe. Looking to invest in one soon. Light weight and holds temp like no other.

I have a weber summit.

For grilling it's king imo. Big surface, high temp and a sear zone together with the infrared heater you can get serious temperatures.

It's also big enough to cook a lot of food on. Other direct and indirect simultaneously.

The smokerbox could have been a bit bigger. I have to refill wood about every 1 hour when smoking. I also think the lid should be tighter
When smoking in windy conditions the smoke blows away.

The build quality is excellent and I expect it last at least long as my old weber which is in its 18th year. Still working fine. No rust after standing out year long in harsh Norwegian weather with snow and rain.

As you may understand from my writing I feel the summit has a few shortcomings as a smoker so I am figuring whether I am going to build an uds or buy a WSM.

The summit is however the best grill I've ever had and I use it year long. Both summer and now during winter with -5 farenheit.

Hope this is helpful.

I have the Summit Charcoal after doing some serious research and almost buying the Kamado Joe. I still like the look of the Joe but the Summit rocks. I still have a kettle and WSM but they rarely are used.
