Pellet spitter useage when not set on "smoke"?

Postby Chasdev » Wed Jul 05, 2017 1:27 pm

I want to cook some bacon wrapped stuffed japs but I don't like them with heavy smoke flavor.
Question is how much smoke is produced at the higher no-smoke settings?
I also like to cook them higher than 250 since the peppers take a long time to fully cook.
I'm running a CampChef in case that matters..

I find it's comparable to using lump.

Typically at higher temps especially ≥ 300°F pellet grills add little smoke flavor.

Does the auger turn at all, are ANY pellets getting burned?
I guess I don't understand how these things work..I thought the heat came from burning pellets, but now I see it's a big electric oven that can also burn pellets?

Typically, temps between 180 to 250 are where you get your super smoke, whatever type of pooper you have. Has nothing to do with the brand, no matter what the advertising speak is, just the nature of the beast.

The auger turns. The pellets are the fuel source. They just burn hotter. The smoke tends to come from more of a smolder, though that's not the right word.

Think about an offset pit. At times you have heavy smoke coming out. At times (hopefully the vast majority of the time), you have thin, bluish smoke. You'll get more of a smoke flavor in a shorter amount of time with the heavier smoke, but it won't be good.

Same fuel, less smoke.

When you crank the temp, you won't notice any smoke coming out of the stack, but it's still burning pellets.

My experience with my Pit Boss is, if you up the temp you get less smoke "so just up the temp and see if yours does the same" :dont: Please let us know what you discover in this cook

Yes the auger turns, continuously for the first 4 minutes then intermittently depending where you have the controller set.
All heat comes from burning pellets electricity is used to start the fire, turn the auger and spin the combustion air fan.
