Fire starters

Looking at grilling supplies in Amazon I ran into a product named Safegel Fire Starter … anyone here ever use this or any gel fire starter? Looks intriguing but I do not know if it has the same issues as charcoal starter fluids, which I would never use. I currently use Big Green Egg squares on the Joe and Weber cubes on the kettle but always on the lookout for better and more efficient starters. Can you share your experience? Thanks!! :D

I use my charcoal chimney put on a propane burner and light. Less then 5 minutes charcoal ready to be put in pit.

I looked that up and I wouldn't put it in my egg( if I had one). Get a chimney and lighter of your choice; I use paper;

Yea, I agree w/ Rambo. Not sure if put that gel in my grill.

I used newspaper and paper towels w/ a drizzle of vegetable oil for years. Got tired of sweating the burning / blowing ashes (especially in times as dry as it is around here now) and keeping up with the old papers so I started using the Weber Starter Cubes. Cheap and they work great.

I use an electric firestarter in my kamado, and a charcoal chimney for the offset. I dont think id use the safegel in a kamado either.

Ok, we agree! I thought that would be the reaction. I do use a chimney as well as direct squares on the Joe and cubes on the Kettle. Don't like the idea of a blow torch since I still have to hold the thing for 15 minutes. Chimney works well. I placed burning coals from the chimney over dry coals, top down burn, works well. Just looking for other alternatives … isn't this grilling / smoking thing fun???
Thanks everyone!! :cheers:

Cotton balls ( 5 or 6 ) soaked in 151 work very well in a pinch.
As for that gel, I'd have to pass on it myself.
