since the insulated eggs are so efficient
they recommend lump because it gives off 1/2 the ash that briquets do
the lump keeps you from smothering your coals with excess ash
it's hard to clean out ash in an egg during a cook

Do urself a favor and make sure ur Ash pan is emptied out as much as you can. Periodically clean and spray it down with PAM cooking spray to prolong it's life.
Ash no matter if it's from briquettes or lump can be harmful to the longevity of ur ash bowl. Also, make sure u have a good cover if u leave it in the elements. It WILL leak water from the rain into the ash bowl and u won't know because it's double walled.
And over time it will rust out.

Good luck you should love it.

Another reason to only use lump is that lump is 100% carbon. No fillers, glues, or other junk. The "junk" can get cause a ceramic to "sour", not good eats. While the Acorn is immune to the souring effect, why eat the fumes of the fillers & glues? Just saying.

Less ash and burns hotter. Don't throw out the unused lump - light it and use it. Stir the lump so the ashes fall through and light it again - I have gotten several cooks off of a load of lump.

when i finish a cook in my OldSmokey I close my vents to smother the charcoal
the next day, when i clean it up to put it away and cover it
i clean out the good, leftover charcoal and store it in a separate bucket
when i'm doing a longer cook, where i need to add charcoal during the cook
i add the leftover charcoal from the prior cooks
i start the chimney with fresh briquets
