Hello guys, I am new to the smoking world & i just bought a used pit that obviously needs some work done, I bought it for only $200 so in my own toughts i think is a heck of a deal. I have started to clean it out with a steel wire brush on the grinder, On the vertical smoker it cleans it pretty good since the pipe is thin, but my main cooking chamber is 1/2in and the grinder cleans it pretty good but some rust just wont come out, Ive read that one i season it with canola/peanut oil the rust should go away? Should i go with this or is there any other cheap way to get rid of the rust? I know sandblasting it will be the best option but i want to save as much $ possible, Let me know what yall think & any upgrades yall think i can add.
Things im doing to it:
Adding new grills
new firebox cage
new pinwheel
Installing a heat deflector
New paint
Best way to get rid of rust

That’s a really good deal. That’s very similar to a Lyfetyme smoker that new would be in excess of $2,000. I would think you could get it sandblasted and painted for less than $200. You’d have it good to go for many years to come. I had a very similar experience and that’s what I did

the little pot blaster from Harbor Freight
you do need an air compressor
put a plastic tarp under it when you use it and you can use the sand again
it uses regular sand
