Taking the money pit to the sand blaster on Saturday. Should have her back Monday afternoon and will put a nice coat of high temp black paint on her.

Not in any way being critical but why did you place the fire/fire grate so high in the burn box?
Are you going to add a lower rail in case the fire needs to be lower in the box?
I've seen where some guys run without a grate at all and let the fire rest on the ash pile as the cook progresses.
Just speculation on my part but it may be to "throttle back" the fire and create a slower burn without choking down the inlet vent settings.

It just worked out that way. I have a smoker at home with a 20" firebox and the manufacturer put the grate 4" off the floor. So building this one, I wanted plenty of room for air circulation under and around the fire for a good clean burn. It measured out to just over 6" off the floor and with a 36" firebox I didn't think it would be a problem. Time will tell if we made the right call.

I got the pit back from the sand blaster today and gave her a coat of pot belly stove black paint. It's looking good!

Mostly done. A few modifications left to do. But was able to bring her home and season the pit today. Held 250 degrees across the entire CC at all the temp gauges. Had to look hard to see the smoke coming out of the stack. Took a log every 45 minutes to maintain that even temp. What a fantastic smoker! Next weekend we throw some meat on the racks and see how she does!!!

Very Very nice. Now with your welding skills, are you thinking about putting a roof on it?

Yes, that's in the plans eventually. For the short term, might just weld a vertical pipe to the backside and slip a big patio umbrella in it for now when I'm cooking.

New handles installed making the doors much easier to open. Flag pole installed. I think she's officially ready to fire up. Log lighting begins tomorrow!

Nice pit, after a few cooks in the rain you’ll be busy designing the roof and fold down sides for it. But it’s very nice and looks like it will draft nice.
