How do you preheat your wood splits if you have an insulated firebox?

I have seen guys set them to the side of there coal basket on the bottom of the firebox. It works if you have room to do so.

IMO pre-heating splits does help- especially when I'm cooking with coals and not a roaring fire. Never cooked with an insulated fire box but I'd think pre-heating for this would help. It's all about the little things. :D
