I just pickup a oklahoma joe longhorn from HD. I have read about most of the mods it will need. i also read about the leaks in the ash pan or ash tray in the fire box is there a mod or fix that i need to do.. or is that something i don't really have to worry about. I just want to get every thing in before i fire it up..thanks for any help can give me...

Re: ash pan or tray mod?
IS IT THIS ONE??
One thing it needs is a thermometer at grate level either drill A new hole OR just get a wireless and stick it thru a tater lol and lay it on the grate also get something to make a dampner form the firebox into the cooking chamber. to angle down .

I don't think a few leaks in the firebox area should matte. All that means is that when your intake is completely closed off, you still have a little air coming in. I don't know of any fire that would burn with no air coming in, so you're probably going to have the intake open at least a little anyway. You'll learn pretty quick where to set your intake for what temp your looking to acquire.
For the dampener between the firebox and cooking chamber that someone above mentioned... what I did was I went to the $1 and got a cheap cookie sheet. I laid it at an angle in the cooking chamber in front of the opening to the firebox. It worked perfectly for me. It's also very cheap, so when this one burns out I can easily replace it. Now that I know what size I need, I may try to find a piece of 1/4" steel to replace it with.
