Trailer Tag laws for Texas?
On my smoker trailer do I have to have a tag for the trailer. It is a home made trailer and the smoker is welded on the trailer.

I believe you do, but not 100% sure. If for nothing else, get them to avoid any hassle with the po po.. I registered mine as a home built trailer and it only cost like $40 per year.

Same as James... Yes you do, but register it as home made... Dont need a title or any of that stuff...

Yes you do any trailer that hits the road needs tags. But like James said make sure it is registered as home build and it is not that expensive. A ticket for hauling it with out will hurt a lot more.

Actually not true when I lived in Kansas you didn't need a tag for small trailers. They billed you for personal property tax on the things but no tags. I made the mistake of hauling one out to Denver and the police there didn't understand nor believe me. I made them call in and check they'd come back and apologize and I'd ask them to call out a APB that KS trailers were OK so I wouldn't get stopped any more.

Re: Trailer Tag laws for Texas?
The OP was asking about the law in Texas, and yes, tags are required. The home-built tip is a good one, though. That being said, there are a lot of them running around here without them, and in this rural part of Texas the police don't seem to mind much. We DO feed them if they happen by while we're smoking, tho...

Yeah, you need the tags. And make sure it's in a position were it's readable. And, on another point, make sure you have good lights. Worked more than one accident were someone run up the back of a small trailer at night, because it wasn't visible. Don't want your smoker compacted up the back end of your pickup!
