Franken Q

Postby badboypolar » Sat Jul 04, 2009 10:46 pm

Here is my first build. It's different but it works quite well. Did turkey legs yesterday and did some tri-tip and baby back ribs today. After this picture was taken I added a 12" section of smoke stack on as I was having a problem with a back up of smoke and it was smoothering my fire. After I added the extra section the temperature stablized and the fire slowed down. I also added 3 more temperature gauges.

The cook chamber is made from a coleman outdoor fireplace, that was sitting rusting away. I replace the expanded metal sides with the sides you see there, then used the sides as the cook surfaces and the charcoal grates in the firebox. The firebox is a 20 gallon air compressor tank and I used some left over exhaust tubing for the connection. If I had to do it again I would lift the fir chamber up 6" and make that connection shorter. Almost everying I used was extra steel from a huge condo project my buddy was working on. So all in all it cost me less then $90 to put this together.

That's some great ingenuity! After all, it isn't how it looks, but how it cooks that matters. Now that you have a Franken-Q, you ought to create some Franken-foods. Here's a couple of ideas:
