You know, I never did look at the temp grill level yet, I'll do that next time and let you know. The main smoker gauge was reading 325.

I have similar set up on half of my pit. I have six pipe burners and added extra ventilation along the bottom but still cant close my door all the way or it starves for air. just wandering if can close your door and/or if you added any extra air vents. also what size of regulator you running.

Hapyjak,

I can keep the doors closed, I just open up the firebox vent all the way, as well as smokestack. My smoker does have 3 openings in the bottom (it's a 250 gal propane tank), the openings are where the old fittings were. I'm guessing one is about 2", the other 2 are 1 1/2". The regulator I am using is a 30psi adjustable regulator. However, I barely turn it up. Too much, and it'll blow itself out. Works well at very little psi. Thinking about changing out to a low pressure regulator to see if it adjusts easier with that. My pipe is different than yours though. 3/4" pipe, slits in the pipe versus holes. Slits facing down to bottom of smoker.

slits. i actually thought of that kind of. i thought of cutting out 1/2" out of the pipe and lay a piece of angle iron in the gap. how did you cut your slits, or the approximate size and frequency.

Hapyjak,

Here's a pic of my pipe burner. Also have a link here of where I got the idea from. Followed the details in the link fairly close, but spaced out the slits every 1 1/2" then further apart as I got down to the capped end of the pipe. Also bought venturis for the pipe ends instead of the homemade ones in the link. I made the slits with a sawzall. Very simple process, and works quite well.
