Modified Smoker this weekend
I modified my smoker a bit this weekend. Added gas to the front half for those times when I need to grill up a load of dogs or burgers. This may be a cardinal sin to some of you, but just thought I would post the pics of the mod here, if anyone is interested. Pics aren't the best quality, camera phone pics.

Hey Brush,
I am thinking about adding Gas assist to my Verticle on my new smoker. I was curious as to how well yours is working and if you think is an addition worth the time and effort?

Bluz,
Works great. I've used it several times now for grilling and to assist with temps. Worked great every time. Cooked up 125 burgers and hot dogs a couple of weeks back for a luncheon. Grilled fajitas and steaks on there as well. Have also used it to maintain temps for long brisket cooks as well.
Process is simple to build and install, and relatively inexpensive.
Read these entries, and look at these pics here:

I followed along with these details more or less, added a venturi instead of a homemade propane/air mixer, and varied the spacing between the cuts to make the flame more even. I used two 3/4 black iron pipes, 3 feet in length for my pit. I'm sure you've got plently of stuff laying around where you could do this for little to nothing.
Give me a holler if you need any further details.

Re: Modified Smoker this weekend
Thanks very much. Yep I've got all the material onsite so cost is not an issue for me on this. I think I am only going to put the assist on the upright, because I have 4 , 28x28 rack in there and that will hold the majority of what I will be cooking at a time. I think my use for them is to allow me to do all the smoking on the horizontal , them be able to move it to the upright and set the temp and allow myself to cook the remainder of time at a constant temp and get some sleep. Unfortunatly I still have to have a job, and night cooks are in my future.
Thanks again Brush

Re: Modified Smoker this weekend
Even though this is a rough drawing, this is what I have in mind for mine. Since I am only heating an area of about 3 cubic ft, I think the single burner will be enough. Am curious to see if others think this will work, prior to trial and error for me. Any thoughts from forum members would be appreciated.
Thanks
