Need Advice

Postby michael » Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:32 pm

Hello from San Antonio,

I need some help, I'm about to embark on the quest to be a true "Q" King!
I found these grills I've listed at a lumber yard, MG Building Materials here in S.A. They are almost an exact resemblance to the LyfeTyme series of grills, they are 1/4" STEEL and very a solid build. They even come with a life time warranty and are built in Uvalde Texas.

Many people keep saying get Klose or Gator pits, well those are like $500.00 plus more then these I'm looking at and seem to do around the same, cook great Q. Is it possible to get least expensive and have same quality outcome!

The http://www.texassmoker.org/ pits are $1099.99 for the 20" wide pipe by 30" with the same vertical stack on end. the 20" by 30" straight pipe with 2 doors for $799.00

any help is thankful,

Michael

Well Mike I'm glad you're here, Welcome. I can't speak for the pits although the pictures look good I have had no experience with them. My advice is to contact the builder and talk to him and insist on contacting some users. Ask them what they like and what they dislike about their pits and maybe what they would change.

Welcome Mike... As Papa Tom sez; and I am sure others will post re: your question. When I got into buying a pit I also considered how many people can I cook for at once. I have equip to cook just for my wife and me, the entire family or a bbq for several hundred.

a hui hou,

I think you meant $5000+?

As far as the cost of pit vs quality of BBQ. The best BBQ I ever ate came off of an open brick pit with a wire rack. A low cost pit!

I think everyone’s situation is different, you should ask what are you going to get for the extra $4,000 - is it worth it? Maybe not for a first time back yard BBQer who cooks out occasionally. But if you plan to haul your pit all over Texas and compete or cater...well maybe you need to step it up.

The Texas Smoker looks like good design to me, but never seen one in person. Lifetime guarantee sounds good. How long they been in business? What is the workmanship like? Talk to someone who cooks on one regularly, they can help.

Maybe someone here has one...

Michael I would advise looking at some used pits prior to purchasing a new pit based on cost alone. New or used look at the quality of the welds, door fit, ECT. I am well aware a person needs to stay within thier budget but as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for".

Micheal, Tejas Pits is the same style and possibly the same "extended" co. as Lyfetyme pits.....these pits cook good but they do not have any kind of tuning plate system, so there are hot spots. Once you learn your cooker you can produce quality Q....I learned a long time ago its not the pit but the pit master behind it....good luck with the hunt....you could contact Ritch at Gator pits...he may have a used one?...but compare sizes and prices before you buy...

Thanks for the recommendations ya'll.

Michael, I am working out a lot of website issues right now. Still not totally official but, I am a exclusive dealer with Lonestar Custom Pits. Basically I wanted to market a very good patio smoker/pit. Working with Tom and his crew, we have came up with three pit designs to market. Of course, Lonestar is totally custom, so anything you want.... it can be added.

This is the design I am most proud of out of all the rest. It is different, and totally designed for the ultimate patio needs. We are starting to market them in a "introduction" price to be the beginning of our new joint venture.

This design will allow you to smoke a great deal of meat with indirect heating. It also has a access door allowing you direct access to the bottom of the upright. This will allow easy access to the coal basket for direct heat grilling. The top two shelves are designed to be easily removed so you have total access to your grilling surface.

As mentioned, I am still working on my marketing website, but you can call Tom with any questions you might have.

Here is the link to more pics and Tom's phone number. Let him know that I directed you to his site.

If you are more interested in the traditional "pipe" style cooking chamber, look at the In Stock page. I recommend a 24" cooking chamber... don't drop down less than a 20".
