I burnt the back of my fingers lifting the lid, so I decided to replace the wooden handles with
Char-Broil Spring Handles, part #55719100. (Cost $3.99 each, plus shipping.)

Lucky for me, the old and new handles had the same width, with the same centers. All I had to do was
drill new hole size (10-32 size bolt to 1/4").



Here's a picture with the new handles installed.


This gives almost another inch clearance.

I am also making a baffle and tuning plates for it. Now, all I got to do is get hold of a bending brake.

Here's another mod I made with the help of a neighbor who did the welding.

I added a stack, using 3" tailpipe tubing.

I discovered that my charcoal basket was made with too fine of expanded
metal. I used 1/2" mesh and will make another one with one inch mesh.
Also, I need to add a gasket to the firebox lid. Too much smoke and heat escape
there.

Is the exhaust galvanized?

Auto exhaust pipe is not galvanized, it's aluminized steel.

It was running at an even 250 until the fire started to suffocate from it's own ashes because
the mesh of the charcoal basket was too small.

Nice looking mods. Now all you need on the top of that stack is a section of 90 degree elbow flue pipe. Don't nail it..just let it spin around so you can point it opposite the wind. Had an old chum with just such an arrangement and aint never seen one draw so well no matter whichaway the wind was blowing. You can take it off in transit etc so it dont fall off. It also good to keep the water out. Dont help much in the bird nest dept. Think he had a 4" stack and the flue pipe made a purty good friction fit over the top. Might take a 3" diameter section for whut you got.
