First smoker build

Postby David1 » Thu May 21, 2020 3:11 pm

Hey guys im new to the forum and this is my first build so you can definitely call me a noob lol. I wanted to build a grill but after starting i really wanted to do a smoker. I built a vertical smoker. Firebox is on bottom with a single square hole leading smoke into cooking chamber. It has a single stack on opposite side of cooking chamber. I burned my first bit of coal in it yesterday to see how it would do temp wise. I put 2 coal wide and 2 coal high on only 1 side of firebox. I got the temp up to 175 and it stayed there the hole time till the coal was gone. Im hoping the low temp was due to the low amount of coal and wood i had in it. I bought some fire bricks today thinking it might help keep the temp hold inside better. Any helpful opinions and advice is needed and welcomed. I have attached several photos to help you visualize. 1 pic is of inside of firebox. I was testing my idead of using expanded metal in a V shape so i could do a minion burn or snake burn whatever you want to call it and it worked. The coals on the other side of it did not catch on so i think that will work for me. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

First off, you need to hold your phone sideways if you want your pics to orient correctly on the forum.

Secondly, why are you putting coals in the cooking chamber? The fire goes in the bottom box.

Thirdly, welcome to the forum.
