Charcoal Basket?

Postby RSOPNCO1 » Tue Mar 24, 2020 8:37 pm

I need advice. I think I’m wanting a charcoal basket. Can you folks provide beat measurements for an Old Country BBQ Pits Wrangler that will support lump charcoal base (lit from chimney) and wood splits for the remainder of the cook? Smoker eats a lot of wood, and I think, it’s got to be the coal bed that’s the weak link.

Thanks guys!

What kind of wood are you using ?
How often are you feeding it?

Using pecan splits from Academy. Some splits I reduce what’s in the bag size for better management. Smoker is fed as often as needed :dont: depending on weather, temp I’m cooking and the wood “quality”. Some pieces have been sub-par; overall I only gotten “bit” once over about that past 10 bags.

If you have the unit, pulling dimensions from it directly would seem to be the best way to go. Angle iron for the frame, expanded metal to contain the charcoal. Some rebar at the bottom will hold up longer to the heat than expanded metal will.
Leave room underneath for the ash.

Keep in mind that some VERY well known and respected BBQ joints don't use any form of grate under the fire.
The sticks are placed at an angle so the fire can run up the sticks and the coals pile up under the bottom of the sticks.
Allowing too much air to flow from the underside can feed the fire too fast, check out pictures of the pits at Franklin's in Austin and Kruez and Black's in Lockhart Tx.
None of them use a fire grate.

My smoker I built is not efficient at all which is why I want to make a different one now. I go through 1 20# bag of lump every 2 1/2 hours. For a brisket, I'll use 4 plus the hardwood I throw in. I made my basket out of rebar.
