Question about charcoal

Postby Stan41 » Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:09 pm

I am not experienced cooking with charcoal, I cook with mesquite that I grow myself. When I finish cooking on my barrel cooker I put the lid on the barrel and it smothers the fire out very quickly. I am afraid of grass fires. When I open it up to cook again there is usually a gallon or two of charcoal in the bottom. Is this the same thing as the lump charcoal sold in bags?

Stan, sure sounds like it. Charcoal is wood that has burned without any oxygen. CF

Thanks. I thought it probably was. I just never have bought any lump charcoal, and very few charcoal briquets.

Maybe. Probally not. Is the residue real light with the texture of glass? Lump is about 99% pure carbon and 1% aromatics. Lump is real brittle like an extinguished match.

The charcoal left in the bottom of my barrel is black, very light in weight, and brittle. As for the texture of glass, I don't think so.

By texture of glass I mean if you tap it you will get a ping sound, like tapping on a pane of glass.
