Your half moon would be 22" wide x 11" tall with a 1.5" grease bridge on the bottom.
The trapezoid at the top would alleviate the worry of grease entering the firebox. Either will work it will just depend on what type of clearance you will need for your firebox to ground.

Re: Back yard smoker
Took your advice kam and did a trapezoid. I initially put the fire grate racks at 5" from the botton but this will make having air inlets more difficult. Im thinking of raising the fire height to 10" from the bottom. My goal is easy clean out while using it and good airflow. Will having the fire this high lead to problems? Plan is to be able to cut back on fuel as the fire box is over sized but itnwill be able to accommodate some decent logs for a long burns

I would wall in the top and sides by 3" then move my grate slides in. Doing this will stiffen your sides, allow you make tall intakes and split the basket up and down. It will also help keep your heat moving towards the cook chamber instead of exiting out the door top plus make a smaller door to manage.

KAM,
I just wanted to say, that the advice, knowledge, and experience that you so freely share and distribute on this forum is simply incredible. And all anyone has to do is have a look at your own builds to know that they are getting great advise. I have an enormous amount of respect for that. And of course it is by no means limited to pit building.
Just had to get that off my chest.

Looking good! Are you going to have a warming grill on the fire box?

Re: Back yard smoker
More than likely will have either a warmer or vertical smoker on the firebox. Have considered possibly making it reverse flow for the vertical part some how and offset when it's not used via dampers. Ive got a large ex mcdonalds taylor grill that eventually im stripping and a trailer that needs a floor and to be cut down a bit. Trailer is 29ft which is a bit much. First goal is getting the smoker functional though then adding to ittantrum95 wrote:Looking good! Are you going to have a warming grill on the fire box?
