Vertical smoker build

Postby HorseShoe W » Mon Apr 16, 2018 7:05 pm

I have built a few offsets before. But I'm wanting to build a vertical. 36"w, 24" deep, two racks, and a water pan. I'm wanting to double wall. I've never done this before. It'll be stick burn, and on 4" casters for mobility. I was going with 12ga steel and 1"x2" framing. Is this overkill or will a lighter gauge and 1"x1" frame work? Also would I need to insulate a double wall? I want to maintain heat, but I don't want to have to use a ton of fuel to reach operating temp. I cook everything at a temp of 225 degrees.

Welcome, I've seen some use 10 gauge, so 12 shouldn't be overkill.

I would go 2" x 2" tubing and use 11 gauge for the skins. The 2" tube will allow for 2" insulation throughout.

Thanks for the input. I had decided to go with the 11 ga. Not sure what type of insulation is best in this application though.
