I'm planning on lining the bottom and sides (in the fire box area, maybe two high) of my smoker. I know others use them but I saw a health warning on them when I went to purchase then.... Are there different types? Also going to put a dusting of sand down to keep the grease from building up on the blocks

I'm guessing they are referring to the dust from cutting them..... probably shouldn't snort it

If you are doing it for insulation and efficiency purposes you are insulating the coolest part of your firebox. The hottest is the upper sides and top. Personally I feel you would be adding extra weight for very little return.

With the heating element im adding I dont want to be heating the metal below it. My cook chamber is well insulated but do to some measuring error on my part wasn't able to get insulation around the bottom lol
