Firebox: 24" diameter, 30" l

Cook chamber: 26" diameter, 4'8"

Stack: 6", probably 3 1/2-4' (not home to measure).

Here is a link to the calculator.
Link to BBQ Pit Calculator
Notice your opening into the cooking chamber need only be 17" wide x 8.5" tall.
Also the 6" exhaust should be sitting at 24" tall.
I still believe some of your problem is exhaust placement.

By "exhaust placement" do you mean location of the smoke stack?

Yes your exhaust location. Being below the grate with your current setup forces the heat/smoke to travel directly to the exhaust.

So what would be the fix for that (preferably the most cost effective one)? Would adding a plate where the fire comes in help? I will be getting it made in to or mounted to a trailer soon, would reattaching the firebox higher and cutting the stack be the right fix?

Cut the exhaust loose and move it up then patch the hole.
Can you tell me about what the opening size is between the chambers?
You can add a 2" piece on the bottom to create the grease bridge then close in the top of the opening to bring it into reason.

Opening is halfmoon shaped and 26" across x 12" high. Thought of getting a plate cut to make a 17" x 8" opening as you mentioned previously.
