Firebox to cc AGAIN

Postby Lilbuilder » Wed Apr 27, 2016 6:49 pm

I've searched this forum and have seen calculations done for the opening but I'm just confused. I have a 120 gallon tank that is 24" in diameter, once I put in my radius x radius x pie or whatever the calculation may be I got 7.25 which is a little bigger then the 111
Sq inches that I need but I'm hoping the 2" angle iron used as a drain will accommodate for it, my question is does this sound right? Next step is to cut the opening so I want to make sure this is right, the other question is is how the heck do y'all measure where to cut, start from inside out then makes mark on the outside?

Measure 4" down from the center of the pipe, and measure straight across, in this instance its 22-5/8",then round up to 23 just to keep it simple

Why did you go down 4 inches?

Use this.
http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html

You can also use these to figure your opening if you want a trapezoid.
http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewt ... 8405a9b099

If you are building a reverse flow I use the top of my firebox as a continuation for the plate I also prefer my plate set at 4.5" below the top of the grate with a 1" fall from the firebox.
If you are using tuning plates I prefer a 4.5" to 6" distance between my plates and top of the grate with 6" being my target.
I hope this helps. :D
If you use the email on the calculator at the bottom for questions they will go to me and Morgan Feldon so I can pretty much answer on the fly.

Hi k.a.m,

Quick question.

What did you mean by:

"with a 1" fall from the firebox"

Thanks,

Dave

The plate has a 1" fall or slope in it so the grease runs away from the firebox end.
