What type of hinge are you using? The most important thing to remember is the hinges need to mirror each other as far as placement. Another thing is if you are using the bridge type hinge the pivot point needs to be behind the top door gap or your seal will bind when opening.

Weld on Bullet hinges with the zerk fittings.


Also KAM, When I'm done with welding the hinges I have to weld on the counter weight, is there a calculation for determining the best location for the counter weight install on the lid?

From the top I come down about 1/3 on the door and mark for my bars. You need to decide whether you will want the weights as stops or have stops for the door to hit. The weights are just an assist so it is good to use pipe or tubing to fill with sand to get the lift you want.
Anther way is to use 1" x 4" lumber or smaller to lay out your fits then just scribe it to the metal.
