when to paint a pit

ok im just finishing up a pit and was wondering should i paint it before the first fire or after.

after. the reason you burn is to burn off the bad stuff.
burn. sand blast. paint.

After, so if you need to make any modifications (hot doors sticking etc) much less stress before you paint

Yes after you have put some heat to her. I usually bring my chambers to 300°/325° for at least an hour that is where I cook my chicken. There really isn't any need in getting it hotter than that.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the results of not painting an add on firebox which I rub down with beef fat while hot.
No rust despite being uncovered and it is turning quite dark.
