Firebox Modification

Postby Walking S BBQ » Fri Oct 30, 2015 11:12 am

I am new to this forum but not new to BBQ. I am wanting to insulate my firebox on my smoker but don't have access to a welder where I am now. I was thinking about grout and ceramic tile on the inside. What are the cons to this idea and does anyone have any other ideas to insulate the inside of my firebox as I am using way to much fuel. My thickness on the firebox steel is about 1/3 -1/2 inch thick I believe. And this rig is set up on a trailer so I'm concerned about the bouncing and the tile.

You're more likely to get a reply in the Custom Built Pits section. Maybe the mods will move your post there. :chef:

Welcome to the forum Walking S BBQ. :D
Without knowing the size of the cooker or the firebox I will say reducing the inside of the firebox is a poor idea as it will cause more fuel consumption than you already have. If your firebox is 3/8" to 1/2" thick I would look at other reasons why you feel the cooker burns more fuel than it should. Going by a standard of 1 to 2 splits an hour how much do you burn?
Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
