Strange idea.... what do you think?
Hello all! I am new here and done some quick searching of the site and didn't see any thing else similar but I probably overlooked it. I have an older brinkmann horizontal offset smoker that was given to me and the door does not shut properly. My idea is to take it and turn it 90 degrees, make it a vertical smoker. Make a charcoal box for the bottom, cut some vents, and add some shelves and hooks up top. What do you guys think?

Re: Strange idea.... what do you think?
Thank you. I just need something for the weekend. I met someone a couple of weeks ago that is selling me his project. It's a 250g propane tank that's already cut and trailer frame with axle for $150. I can get sheets of 4x8 steel for cheap since my dad's machine shop orders in bulk. I'm thinking total investment would be around $600.

Anyone know how big and how many intakes I need down at the bottom? I can't remember the diameter off the top of my head as I'm 5 hours away from it at the moment.

If you are going to use it like a UDS then four 3/4" holes evenly spaced along the bottom will work. Make your holes 2" off the bottom and the bottom of your charcoal basket 3" off the bottom.

Thank you! That's what I was looking for! Could I use a charcoal pan for a older brinkmann esd and drill holes in it for the basket?

I don't see why not. The worst that could happen is it not work and you have to construct one.

That's the way I looked at it. Do you have any ideas for some sort of latch that I could find locally?

Just something that will pull the door closed as tight as possible.
