i have an uninsulated fire box on my reverse flow offset rig. i'm curious to know if anyone has ever used fire bricks as a cheap way to turn their uninsulated fire box into an insulated one by just lining the insides of their fire box with fire bricks. is that a good idea? can you cook with them in the box/is it safe? if so, are there any recommendations or better ways of doing it?

In my opinion it is a poor idea because you are taking a firebox that has been balanced to the cooking chamber and reducing it's inside area.

Does your top box rely on the radiant heat from the firebox for some or all of its cooking? If so I would not even bother trying to insulate the firebox.
The only correct fix if you want it insulated is to skin the outside this will be costly but doable.

good point. i was thinking more for the sides of the fire box, but that may not be the most efficient thing either.
