Thanks k.a.m. for the reply about the door and the paint. Pit looks great and the roof came out awesome. Did you fire it up yet?

How does it pull KAM? Always wondered how one of these would handle a crosswind.

Yesterday Debbie and I seasoned the cooker. I finished my fire grates and then we were off.
I like these wedge grates. They can be removed if you do not want to use them.

Debbie doing what she loves playing with fire.

After the cooker was dried out and up to 350° I oiled the inside with Pam grilling spray. In this pic the intakes are wide open and the left side is about 50° hotter than the right.
Image

While she was turning and burning I took some readings of the firebox and other areas. This is the top of the firebox.
Image

This pic is the side of the firebox by my lights.
Image

This is the trailer frame notice the drastic drop in temps so no worries about the lights getting too hot.
Image

I let her run for about an hour at these temps to test the paint and all was well. I throttled her back to about 1/2 intake to settle her in.
Image

I like seeing the therms balance out. I had ran a test burn in her before paint so I pretty much knew where to set my plates. she held these even temps for the rest of the evening.
Image

The rest of the evening was watching nothing but thin blue smoke and a heat signature. The next run will be a lot of chicken. :D

k.a.m.

Looks like everything came out the way you wanted. Love how it settled down and ran even when you cut back the air.
Great job k.a.m.

Mark

p.s. my favorite pic was the 2nd one. Looks like a cold XX on the shelf.
Take care.

That's good medicine! The first fire is like a kid on Christmas morning. Looks good K.A.M.!

What kind of paint did you use?

My son works for a blasting yard Mark. They use the Zinc primer on a lot of pieces. I am not sure where they get it.

I noticed the other day that my loaded side of the trailer was squatting pretty bad and that my axle had moved back in the fender. I never noticed this before and was concerned so after a lot of questioning and measuring to make sure my hangers were set properly I either had a bad spring or overloaded. I specked out this cooker to be well with in a 1750 lb. spring set up but I was scratching my head wondering so I opted for a 2400 lb spring replacement.
Here is a pic of the 1750 lb. in place. Notice the spring well past the mount.
Image

Here is a pic of the 2400 lb. in place. Notice the spring still resting under the hanger.
Image

Here is a pic of the 1750 lb. springs. The left side was nearly 5/8" longer when measuring with no load. I am pretty sure this spring was weak from the get go.
Image

After my first two seasonings I was not happy with the heat coming off the firebox strictly as a safety issue to me or others. I talked to a good friend and he had a source for a thermal reactor blanket to kill the heat. This blanket is rated for 2700 degrees I am looking forward to testing it out. :D
