Briquette Price Scammin'

Postby Hex » Fri Oct 26, 2007 12:28 pm

I try to always keep a bag or two of 20# briquettes in the shed.
For last few years I have used the WalMart Sams Choice or some such name oversize briquettes.
They came in a colorful 20 pound bag. and also in 10 pound bags.
The top was spose to be re-sealable but that dog never would hunt.

The price was about $4.65 for the 20 pounder. I never bought the 10 lb sack.

So today I went to replace a bag and I see the pricehas dropped to $4.62, however the bag looks different and the volume is now 18 pounds. Also the 10 pounder is now 8.? something pounds.

Why oh Why can't retailers leave well enough along?

Sure I'd rather buy lump but not for the price difference, and I top all my briquettes with wood anyway. prob 60-40 wood to coal.

There is a grocery chain here that often runs Royal Oak at 1.95 to 2.20 per 10 (now 9) pound bag. That's a good price and I need to stock up.

Lazarri lump did the scam. Safeway was selling it at little above $8 for a 20# bag. Same price, but now it is a 15# bag. Still cheaper and better than Cowboy of BGE brand.

That's a good question. They are always out to try to pass something over on us w/out raising suspicion. Probably had a big price drop sign there too.

I would like to just give 'em 80 cents on the $ and tell em it's MY way of increasing profits.

BTW, who has the Royal Oak for that price? Is it lump or briquets?

I'm not too surprised. Most people won't complain about the quantity drop. Now, if they raised the prices . . .

Coffee is in one pound cans, but you only get 12oz. New fangled way of flaking the beans so the yield is the same....so they say.

I'm not bothered by the price of charcoal since I don't use any. I use wood that I cut myself or charcoal that I make myself.

To me it goes back to a cost/benefit thing. We they pull stuff like that, usually I go to a competitor or go without. Enough folks do that, then their sales drop and they have to react to the market.

Didn't Kingsford start the revolution? When they redesigned (?) the briquet to light faster & (supposedly) burn longer, didn't they drop the bags down to 18.5 & 8.5 pounds? They claimed you got the same value for the money.

That's a pretty good price for Royal Oak. Up here it's just over $6 for the 18#. In the past I've bought the Kingsford twin packs, usually a reasonable price (2 - 15# for $8 or so). I noticed this year that they've went up to anywhere from just over $11 to $13. On another note, I still haven't seen and of the Kingsford Comp. around here.
