Texas Longhorn / Factory Direct pits

Postby Kalrog » Thu Oct 25, 2007 8:58 pm

Does anyone have any experience with these pits or this company? They are very local (and I would prefer to shop locally if possible) and your opinions would be appreciated. I am specifically thinking about TL96. The other front runner is a vertical one that I saw at HEB with an offset firebox. It was next to the Lyfe Tyme smokers, but I don't think it was a Lyfe Tyme since it was priced at $250 and looked to be 1/8" or 3/16" steel instead of the 1/4" of Lyfe Tyme.

I do not know anyone that owns a smoker from bbqpits.. I do have a buddy that has a Lyfe Tyme, and its been a heck of a good pit.. Well worth the bank.

Since they go out their way to mention 1/4 steel on the big boys, I suspect the hitch model is made from something less.

A couple of thoughts....
While cooking you're going to be immobile, you might need a 2nd car for beer runs, etc.

And while mobile, a bet if a Yugo rear ended you, that pit would be in the Yugo's drivers seat. Might be hard to extract.

How well balanced are they? Might put some stress on your receiver.

Overall looks like a nice setup.

Kalrog,
Let me know if you get any response from these guys. I attempted to contact them numerous times earlier in the year and got no reply to any of my messages. I was disappointed at the time cause I was looking for a bigger pit than the Lyfe Tyme mobile pit I had at the time. I guess everything happens for a reason cause I ended up with "Big D II".

Will do! I might just stop by on my way to/from work some day.

*edit*
Hey - are there any other good places to go and check out pits locally? The best I have found so far (admittedly I haven't been looking very long) is the HEB Plus in Leander. I'm sure there have to be better places to check...

Magnum Trailers on 620 has a good assortment of Lyfe Tyme pits both backyard and mobile (thats where I bought my mobile). Have you looked on Craigslist.com, there are always some nice pits on there as well.

I did check Craigslist... I must have hit a dry spell. I'll try again (and Magnum as well).

I sent them an email via their website on Monday. No response yet... Not a good sign at all.
