The floor plan sounds great. Do you plan on changing the axle to a 3500 lb. ?
That cooker is gonna make that little boat trailer squeal when you set her down.

hadn't planned on exchanging the axle. from my calculations i'm thinking the pit will be right around 900lbs.

i'll look into getting another axle.

just found out the tires on this trailer are corroded so bad, the new tires won't go on. so now i'm off to hunt down some new rims.

That appears to be a 2000 lb. axle under the trailer maybe less. That is the weight rating of the axle evenly distributed. You are fixing to drop half that rating on one side and hope the springs and spindle can handle it going down the hwy. Just some food for thought. ;) :D

Jelly worker.
Just cut some 1 1/2" x 14 flat bar on a 45* angle and weld it on edge to the door then hunt down a nice piece of hardwood for the handle like this https://goo.gl/vUAvgr

Make sure you are using a respirator if grinding or welding on that nasty old paint, it will take a toll on your lungs.
Not long to go till you get a fire in her!

Ahumadora,

thanks. i've found some steel handles for cheap here http://www.bbqsmokersupply.com/index.ph ... cts_id=115

but it doesn't look like it comes w/ the rod to attach to the pit.

do you think that flat bar will be easier? i make look into that. thats a very nice piece of word on that pic. is that yours?

respirator? now you tell me. lol.

I use 1/4" x 2" flat bar and shape it to the design I want. Then drill 1/2" holes in the end for the rod using the springs like you posted.
These are on a 24" cooker.

thanks cam. just left the steel supply. got the 1/4" x 2" flat bar and a 3/4" circle bar. 10' of each was cheaper than what one spring handle including assembly.

now, i just need to come up with the bar shape.
