Re: building my pit

and fellas, when i say she can hold temp, i mean she can hold temp. once we got her going, she held 275 for almost 2 hours before i had to add more sticks.

we had a wagyu brisket, pork shoulder, 4 sexy chicks, and a few slabs of ribs and there was plenty of room to add more. i was worried that the left side (away from the firebox) would be much cooler but to my surprise the meat on the left side turned out as great as the right side and cooked evenly.

i'm happy. i'm grateful. i know my dad will never read this but i know i couldn't have done this w/o him and i will cherish this pit forever. thanks sir.

i didn't get to bring her home this weekend like i planned. plenty more to do. have to add lights to the trailer and a floor. fenders, a rail and basket.
also, we need to redo a few welds. i'm not a welder and dad isn't a welder but i wouldn't trade this pit for anything. getting to spend every weekend w/ him, and building something that i'll keep for a lifetime and even compete with is priceless to me.

once i bring her home i'll get her sandblasted and painted. i was thinking sunset orange like the 350Z i use to have, but he talked me out of it. it getting greasy and looking nasty and hard to clean so i'm going traditional black.

thanks for following our journey and thanks for your tips and help.

this is the flavor-buster. but my finance calls her "that b!+ch". lol

i'll update after i complete it w/ paint and everything. then we'll start our next project.

big berta. 48" diameter x 36" x 2" piece of pipe for the rotisserie. i can't wait.

Very nice work jellyworker. :D
Congrats to you and your Dad on a job well done. :D It does not have to be how pretty the welds or cuts are. The bottom line is she works and you and your Dad built her with each others help. :D

hey guys,

i'm almost at the end of this build and i just had the thought of adding a burner and propane tank. can any of you buys point me to where i can buy a propane "eye" (im guessing thats what its called) and maybe the housing. i'm thinking maybe i can weld something together for the housing but i certainly need the eye. on yea, and some sort of hose that will go back to the tank.

any help here would be great.

Are you talking about the burner itself or the grate the pot sits on?

I'm talking about having a burner somewhere on the side of the pit. Maybe on the back side where I could put a pot or two. I'd like to have a propane tank that feeds it. So the eye, the housing for the eye, and the hose back to the tank.

The eye part is where you are losing me I do not know what you're talking about.
For instance on my cooker I have a bottle and on that bottle I have a hose and ACME nut and regulator that screws into the bottle. The hose attaches to SS pipe that runs to needle valves for my burners. From the needle valves the SS pipe goes to my burners.
So which part of this are you wanting to know about?

sorry for the delayed response.

it looks like i'm talking about a burner. see here.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cast-Iron-Banjo ... 2a58cd20ae

i was thinking of eye like the eye on a gas stove where the gas comes out of.
the link about has one for 41 bucks. is that the avg price? i have a few turkey fryers. is it possible to remove and reuse one of those burners?

well, i just looked at your cooker. i've attached a pic of what i'm talking about.
did you build the burner holders yourself? that is exactly what i want to add to mine.

Now we are on the same page. :D
Yes I built my burner stand that holds the burner. The burners I used were 6" low pressure banjo burners.
This is the burner I used.

The one you are looking at is not really suited for simmering beans or sauces. It is for much larger pots that require a fast recovery time.

thats what i needed to know.

i don't know if i can weld a base together as good as you.

what about this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-BURNER-CAST-I ... 4af0f54309

do you think this would work if i welded it directly on to a stand?
