Painting Rusty Metal

Can someone give me some tips on painting a propane end cap that I had made into a fire pit? Is there some chemical that I should put on the fire pit to remove the rust before I roll on the high heat paint? Not quite sure how to do this. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can't think of the brand name I think it was Phos (something) they sell it at ACE it is a metal primer that seals the rust n. Brush it on and let it dry overnight slap the paint to it. I used it on my Rusty Corral pipe fencing 3 yrs ago not a spec of rust to be seen any where.

Ospho may be what your thinking about. It's phosphoric acid based. Great stuff on rust. If there are any big what flaky areas after the first coat scrape and put another coat on.

DON'T GET IT IN YOUR EYES. Also should use with lots of ventilation and wear gloves. Also it loves to break down concrete so...

Works real well at neutralizing rust.

Eastwood Company carries some rust cleaning and blocking stuff. I've used POR-15 rust blocking paintin the past with good results. It's just a bear to wash of your hands. I also don't know how well it would hold up to high heat paint. Using high heat paint as a finish coat probably wouldn't do much good if the coating underneath wasn't high heat.

Depending on where you live as far as weather Humidity and the like will dictate how well acid treats like ospho will slow the rust.
Out west where the air is drier bare metal will form a light coat of rust and stay that way for years. Where I live around Beaumont and the coast that same metal will be pitting in about 18 months.
Nothing will take the place of a clean blast and an inorganic Zinc primer before painting.
If it is just surface rust and no pitting like cancer then a good wire wheel and the ospho will slow the rust but not stop it.
