SIZE OF FIREBOX....................

Ok guys, heres whats going on................I just purchased a fixer upper smoker/grill. It is welded to an axle so I can pull it behind my truck. It is in pretty good shape I just want some modifications so I am gonna have some questions and I want everyones opinions.........
My first one is about the firebox. right now it does not have a seperate firebox. They heated from one side and cooked on the other. So I want to add a firebox for a couple of reasons.........
1..........so I can have more space
2...........because a buddy of mine has a flat surface on the top of his and it cooks eggs and panckaes better than any skillet I have ever seen.
So should the firebox be a certain size in relation to the size of the cooking area...........can it be too big or too small..............
I will be posting pictures and progress reports on the project. This hopefully will turn out to be a great smoker. Rtight now I am using friends and I have one of those small round ones that won't hold much. This one is close to 10 feet long so I can cook more at one time.
