Competition Question

Postby TexasPyro » Wed Jun 05, 2013 3:44 pm

Do y'all prefer to cook in competitions sanctioned by one sanctioning party or another? ICBA, LSBS, KCBS? Are there advantages to sticking to just one? Or does it not matter, if there is beer available you're cooking in it? :drunk:

There's not a huge difference between IBCA, LSBS or TGCBCA. I haven't cooked in a KCBS comp yet. I mostly go to comps that are close by, regardless of the sanctioning body and I usually do one or two that are for fundraisers also. some of the guys probably give payout a big consideration also. But mostly I think we do it for the challenge.

Well I cook a few comps a year that arent even sanctioned, so that should tell you why I'm in it...A) I'm just competitive in nature... B) I like beer :D

Thanks for the replies, that's what I was curious of, didn't know if it was bad form or not to cook in one competition or the other. Ive personally been looking for anything and everything that's within two hours drive or so. I look forward to meeting a lot of y'all along the way.

Never gone to a competition does everyone have big trailer mounted pits? Or is ther some that use drums and WSMs? If I wrestled my pit onto a trailer and drug it out to one would I be laughed out of the place? Just looking at ways to get out on the weekends.
Thank You to all the fine folks here for all the tips and advice so I can now smoke a chunk of meat and folks actually eat it.

Last year a guy came to a local comp with some Weber Kettles and a couple of homemade drums and walked out GC. You'll see a little bit of everything.

Competition Question

Postby NPayne1 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:47 pm

My first comp consisted of my backyard smoker and my father-in-laws backyard smoker. Brought in on a trailer, left the same way and we did alright. Walked in both brisket and cabrito. Of corse I went home and began designing and building a trailer mounted pit. It's not like BBQ is addicting or anything.

Ive seen back yard guys come to a cookoff and win over big name cookers, It doesn't matter what you cook on or what everyone else thinks of your setup, its not like that, we are all in it for the Love of BBQ, not for how much your rig cost, who cares ????? :dont:
