Every cook off I have been to I have seen at least one if not more WSM cookers. I cooked all last year on three UDS smokers got a trophy at every at all of them as well even if it was only 4 events.

I have an 18.5 that I grill all my chickens on. It's a great cooker.

Started out on UDS's with a heat diverter which is the exact same concept. Did quite well with them.

Used a 22" WSM for 1/2 of this year. Won money cooking ribs and pork butt on it on more than one occassion. Lots of folks use WSM's for one thing or another, some use them for everything.

For the money, nothing cooks better in my opinion.

Charcoal, lump, wood chunks, etc. Which seems to work best?

I used straight lump in mine, light about a chimney full dump em in let the pit get to a stable temp you want, for me I ran my pit at 325 for chickens and in an hour 15 they were done. No water pan an would do 4 halves on top grate.

Thanks for your replys guys, have upgraded to a lot fairly large smoker that i am using for my catering business, it uses a good bit of fuel but cooks very well, Thinking about using my wsm to take to comps that are a ways from home, i have a Ford Excursion so room is not a problem but i believe i will get one of those hitch mounted cargo carriers to carry it and my large ice chest, I cooked a Wal-Mart choice packer brisket on the wsm that turned out so well i would have been proud to have turned in at a comp, i have a seperate chicken cooker so i will just have to fit in the ribs along with the brisket, going to give it a try
