Turkeyfest 2008

Postby TX Sandman » Sun Nov 16, 2008 12:04 am

Today was the annual "deep fry turkeys and eat til you burst" party, also known as Turkeyfest.

"If it flies, it fries." Well, since most turkeys can't fly anymore, I guess this doesn't fit. But, it's as good a motto as any. Since a couple folks complained about a lack of health food, my BIL said next year's motto should be "You coulda had a V-8!"

First, you have to have the commemorative T-shirt.

From there, it's fry birds, snack as they come out, and just sit around, BS, and enjoy the day.

A little of this:

And a lot of this:

Overall, we fried 5 turkeys, from 10.25 lbs to 14.5 lbs. We ate 2, while the others were bagged up for later munching.

Sides? Well, there weren't any. We had a load of snacks, like cheese, salami, and some chips 'n dips. But no organized meal. No plated pics, either, for the same reason.

Me, I decided to try my hand at homemade marshmallows. We were going to have a chocolate fountain for dessert, but it was vetoed. Still, here's the pics.

As you can see, my daughter gave 'em a thumbs up. BTW, that string from my wife's hand to my daughter in pic 3? That's a strand of marshmallow. Sticky, but tasty.

 Well, *they* were. The door was open, and by the time we got there, they'd already set up in the garage and had a bird in the oil. I told them it was safer outside, but with winds averaging 30 MPH, gusts over 45, they couldn't erect a windblock that would hold. With the space around them, and the fact that the oil was *never* left unattended, they felt they would be safe.

No, they aren't the brightest bulbs sometimes.

Rob, sounds like my kind of party, but guess we will have the formal type. Got lots of folks coming over for dinner, most I don't know. Reckon I will get acquainted. CF :D

Looks like a good time Rob!

Dittos on cooking out doors, my buddy caught his back porch on fire one year. Scared the be-jebers outta him.

Does look like a fun time. With the price of oil, I haven't done mch deep frying. Fried turkey sure is good stuff, though! (Might think about a fire extinguisher for a Christmas gift!)

I was thinkin the same thing when i saw the set up in the garage. Yikes. Turkey looked great though. Bet it tasted even greater. Ya might wanna tell them that if they ever set it up in the garage again to at the very least have a fire extinguisher within easy reach.
