When I was at home growing up we "always" had cabbage and blackeyed peas on New Years Day because Mom said that they brought you good health and wealth. Well one outa two ain't bad. Several years ago I started solving this need with a dish that we all love called "Cabbage Patch Stew". The recipe was given to me by my dear friend Betty Kellye who used to send a big pot to the deer camp with her late husband and it was the hit of the weekend. Anyhow, I thought I'd share the recipe and some pics with Y'all today so here goes. BTW, this goes well with a pan of cornbread. On New Years Day I'm planning on some corn pones, aka hot water cornbread patties or as John Wayne called them in True Grit "Corn Dodgers" !
Ingredients:
1 Cabbage
1 pound ground beef
1 sm Onion chopped fine
1/2 cup chopped celery
2 cans Rotels and Green Chilies
1 can of Blackeyed peas (I use Jalapeno Blackeyes for New Years but Jalapeno Pintos normally)
1 1/2 cup water
3 slices bacon chopped fine
1 tsp sugar
salt and pepper to taste
Brown and drain ground beef
Then cook altogether until Cabbage is done
(NOTE: when cutting up the cabbage, just half it and then 1/4 the two halves - - - remove the core also)
Goodies are Gathered
Ready to introduce the Cabbage
Simmering low and stirring regularly to help cabbage cook uniformly.

Re: SOUPerstition Stew
My wife makes great fried cabbage so I may suggest this to her. I love cabbage, but it does not love me.

Re: SOUPerstition Stew
LOL - Outlaw!!!!
Parts - sounds and looks really good. Might have to give it a go.
I had my black eyed peas in a Hoppin’ John dish my aunt makes. It has rice, black eyed peas and she adds Earl Campbell hot links. Just happened to be sitting next to the homemade queso and nearly famous green sauce so I topped mine off for extra luck :)
