Meat Grinder questions

Postby atcNick » Sat Dec 19, 2009 3:32 pm

I'm wanting to get in touch with my Polish roots and make some different kielbasas.

I've looked around online and the prices of meat grinders seem to differ big time for similar looking items. Compare something at Academy to something at the Sausage Maker. What should I look for a in a meat grinder and all other sausage making equipment? Any input would be appreciated.

I'm not going to be making large quantities, just enough for family.

Thanksl\.

The basic set up would be Porkert or hand grinder. The motorized ones, well the good ones have all steel gears, the cheap ones have plastic gears. Had one of those, busted on the 3rd grind  It listed for $129, on clearance for $40. Guess I got what I paid for. So now I'm back to the porkert. Good enough for jobs less than 5#. Now the stuffer, can't see I lived without it now.

It's made by Westin. Plunger style. 3# tinned. It's on the economy side of the scale but does the job. Much better than trying use the hand grinder as a stuffer, how I got started.

Whatever you get, Nick, make sure you can get replacement knives and plates, washers and other parts that might break or wear out. Still need to get myself a stuffer.

I have the northern tool grinder and it is great. You can stuff with it too, but it is a PITA. :). Metal gears, too.
