Meat grinder recommendations

I am looking to add a meat grinder to my appliance collection for making sausage, burgers, etc. I just don't know what direction to go. I have a Kitchen Aid, so I could get that attachment, but I fear it would be easily outgrown and not strong enough. I see them all over ebay and craigslist, but don't know what to look for. I'd like to keep it int he $100 range so the wife doesn't kill me too much.

All those $100.00 grinders are probably made by the same manufacturer. If you want to stay in the $100.00 range, buy the attachment for the Kitchen-aid for grinding, and use the money you save for a stuffer.

Here's a couple of articles on grinders.

Like jmcrig says, you won't get much for $100. I have the Kitchenaid grinder. It is fine for grinding up 4 lb. chuck roasts to make your own hamburger, or other small jobs. But if you get into sausage making, it won't work. I plan on buying a LEM #12 or LEM #22. But we are talking $450-600.

That was my fear. I guess I can start with the Kitchen Aid one first.

It'll work, but it is slow.

I bought a < $100 grinder from Cabelas and while it groans and complains it has made a load of sausage without problems.

A tip on whatever you get make sure it has stainless die plates, you don't need rust problems. (BTW the Cabelas has 'em).

Also if you want to make small sausages (smaller than brats like your standard size Oscar Mayer hot dog ) you will probably have to find a small funnel tip as the machines never seem to include the small guy.

I have a feeling that I'd like to make breakfast links, kielbasa and Italian sausage along with the various ground meats. I like the manual cylinder style sausage stuffer idea since I've seen that suggested at many places.

I have gone down the cheap road, $100 stuffer/grinder, bought extra plates, it sits in the kitchen unused, bought a real grinder paid about $400 and I grind, what I want when I want quickly with no frustration. I would like nothing more than to sell the POS I have called a grinder however who ever would wind up with would be extremely disappointed. Buy yourself a real grinder and learn from my disappointing education...

That makes a lot of sense and I usually end up going that way.

I know that it is old topic but I have this problem few weeks ago and I found few places where we can read meat grinder reviews. I found few grinders for around 100$ so It's possible to get good machine for that price.
