If it got vegetables in it it is soup, it might be a SW Veg Beef, Or what my granny used to call Chuck Wagon Gumbo, real Chili is closer to Carne Grisada. Every time someone calls something Chili and it has beans and corn and lord knows what else in it I think there is a San Antonio Chili Queen rolling over in the grave.

I'll eat chili either way, but prefer it with beans - especially pinto or black beans. I haven't perfected my chili, but I have tried it all kinds of crazy ways. One of my favorites that I've cooked is alligator chili with pinto beans. Just thinking about it, I'm ready for a bowl for breakfast

I know this is an old topic, but I like chili either way, but I guess I add beans because I'm a Tight A&& and it makes it go further. Kinda adding fillers to meat loaf.

When we were growing up, Mom would put beans and/or taters in just about everything to stretch a meal... Beans in chili, taters with eggs in burritos etc. Still like 'em that way to.

My comp chili - no beans. Eating at home chili - well, it's like a stew. Won several local cookoffs (non-sanctioned) cooking my homestyle.

I grew up in a household of 7. My mom not only put beans in the chili, but she also served it over rice to make it go farther. Same thing when she cooked cabbage. Today I still serve chili or cabbage over rice when I'm cooking them as the main dish. Funny how things like that end up just passing down from generation to generation.

Yeppers, should have mentioned rice too... My mom grew up mostly in Brownsville, Tx (with some time in Corpus Christi) and with the Mexican influence... it was a lot of rice, beans and taters... and sometimes just those three items rolled up in tortillas, home made of course.

In New Orleans cooking, rice ends up with a lot of things so it just seems like a natural fit for chili to me. However, I'm not sure many people around here do use rice with it as I often get funny looks whe I mention that.

Growing up we never had beans in our chili that my mother made. Did eat it over rice or spaghetti.
