Good showing, better learning experience
Went to my first competition this past weekend. A KCBS sanctioned event a few miles from home. Cooked probably the worst ribs I've ever seen, but everything else came out OK, or at least, I thought. Didn't sauce the pork and found out later that is a KCBS travesty. Brisket looked great but placed last. Got some good comments on how to improve. Although, we had a few other competitors try it out, including a Jack Daniels winner and they disagreed with judges greatly. Chicken took 2nd place out of 60 teams though. Overall a great experience, very happy to have got a call in our first competition ever. Even more grateful for the knowledge gained from our competitors. Everyone was extremely helpful. Can't wait for the next.

I am getting to my first comp also. Dont really know what to expect. I would be tickled pink to get a 2nd anything at my first try.

Congratulations on the 2nd in chicken. I don't compete for the very reason that you got hammered. I believe that if you got to sauce the "Q" then it must not be all that good if you got to hide it under a sauce. I'm just wired a little different.
Never met a cow I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

Re: Good showing, better learning experience
Congrats on the call. Chicken is a tough catagory at KCBS - prepared much different than Texas comps. Good to hear you got advice from other cooks. That's one thing I've found in BBQ - you may not get the secret ingredient or technique, but everyone is usually more than willing to help out another cook. Glad you enjoyed it!
