I'm lookingh for some advice, pointers, on how to get started in BBQ competition cooking.
If there has already been a forum thread on this topic, please point me to it.
I will have a pit completed soon.
not sure what to do first.... join a BBQ sociaty etc.
I'm pretty sure joining this forum was a good thing to do but what next?
Is there a cook off this weekend or next weekend close to Seguin/ New Braunfels that I could attend and observe and possibly meet some of you guys?
any suggestions would be appreciated

Sounds like you might want to get in touch with DaHorns here on the forum. He lives on the NW side of Austin and seems like he is always doing comps and large cooks. He's a really nice guy and I'm sure that he would help ya.

A lot of folks start off by attending and judging competitions. I know they are always lookin for judges. Contact on of the organizations and volunteer to be a judge.

Another fella ya your going to want to look up is 3 Star Redneck here on the forum. He is constantly cooking comps and consistently placing well in them. He is always to help out new comp cooks too!
Judging is always a good way to ease into it. That way, you get to see what the other competitors are turning in and what the judges are expecting.

BAR "G" BBQ would be another to look up at a comp. He does well also.
Going to the comps and meeting and talking to the different teams is a great idea to get started. Then see about judging for an inside look at what is being turned in and the tastes the judges are looking for.

Check out these sites for up-coming events;
http://www.lonestarbarbecue.com" target="_blank" target="_blank
http://www.ibcabbq.org" target="_blank" target="_blank
http://www.tgcbca.org" target="_blank" target="_blank
Make some cook-offs, visit, do some judging and then jump in with both feet or just by pass the first 3 and just jump in.
Note; it is not necessary to be a BBQ Society member to compete although once you determine thats what you want to do then join the society of your choice one or all. Membership dues are reasonable and BBQ societys insure a fair chance for the new cook as well as the experienced cook. Hope to meet you on the smoking trail in the near future.

Re: how to get started
I just started doing comps last year and I just got a hold of the rules and jumped right in. We did some big boys and one small one. I suggest you start at a small one, but the big ones are just as fun. Just drink lots of cold ones and don't set your expectations too high out of the gate and you'll be addicted like me.
