Throwdown Series Idea

Postby TX1911 » Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:28 pm

Alright folks, I've put quite a bit of thought into possibilities for the next throwdown and wanted to put this out there to see what everyone thinks.

This would be a Throwdown Series that would consist of a few events spread over a few months. The idea would be to treat it as sort of a cook-off.

So, along that vein, we would have throwdowns focusing on the following categories:
- Beans
- Chicken
- Pork Spare Ribs
- Brisket

The rules would be similar to a competition. Sides won't be allowed, and the entry must be presented alone on a plate, cutting board, or similar innocuous item, and all entries would contain the secret code for that particular event.

Scoring would be as follows:
- 1st Place = 15 points
- 2nd Place = 12 points
- 3rd Place = 10 points
- 4th Place = 9 points

All places after 4th would decrease by 1 until 12 which would receive 1 (assuming, of course, that we have 12 entries).

After the brisket competition, point totals will be calculated. The winner would receive two items from me. A trophy commemorating their victor and a Sucklebusters package of goodies to be determined later.

I'm trying to come up with something fun and different that will keep everyone involved for a while, if you are curious as to my motivation for the "series".

What say you?

If you want to have a shot at the prize, participation will be just about mandatory in all 4 categories.

This is what gives me pause. If we do it, will the participants commit to participate in them all?

This interesting and I would do what I could to participate.

From a foreigner: What is usually meant with beans in competitions. Is it any dish containing beans or is it a dish with beans alone?

Good question. Here, it's typically pinto beans. That would disadvantage our international members, so how about we change it to beef fajitas?

Joe, can you access skirt steak, flap steak or flank steak?

Thanks. We can get pinto beans (and a lot of other beans) here. We just don't use it very much though.

And yes, we can get both flanksteak, skirtsteak here. I really appreciate your suggestion to change from beans to fajitas. However, this is a Texas BBQ forum which I love to be a part of and I value all I can learn from being here. That includes both familiar and unknown dishes for me.

If you think beans is the right thing I think you should go for beans and as an overseas member I just have to do some extra homework. I'll gladly cook beans if that's one of the categories.

Just a pic of your entry with the ?secret? code or verification item somewhere in the pic. :salut:

darned decent of you Joe. The more I think about it though, with the platform being photographs, I think fajitas would be more appropriate. Plus, we have them at the comps I participate in, so it's a legit option!
