Had the father in law and his lady over to the house on tuesday. He wanted Ribs and with the time crunch I told him I'd do some Beer Can Chickens. Didn't have any (don't drink anymore) beer so I used sprite cans.
Got 2 birds, rubbed 1 down with Wolfe Rub Original
Rubbed the other down with a local rub Smoke n Guns HOT
Threw down some Royal Oak briquettes, about 15 per side. Soaked some apple wood chips and threw those on either side.
About half way through. Pulled Chickens at 180*, thigh temp.
Pulled the birds at 180* in the thigh as mentioned before. Chickens always turn out moist, we like to do these at least a couple times a month!

I retired the beer and I didn't have any around. I've heard of people using soda to stuff the bird, Dr. Pepper being one. I remember someone from another post stuffing the neck with lemons and oranges so I thought sprite.
The soda can really doesn't impart any flavor to the bird, my guess is that it just keeps the bird moist inside plus providing a 'throne' to stand on.
I was actually just going to use a coke can filled half with water instead of coke but the wife said try sprite. I've actually seen beer can chicken 'stands' that you just stuff in the bird in place of a can, so again, I don't see, other than moisture, the choice of soda, beer etc. imparting any flavor.
We do these about once a month instead of buying those rotiss chickens the grocery store does and charges ya $7 for.
So there ya have it.
