Burgers for dinner

Postby JamesB » Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:08 pm

At the store today, ground chuck was $3.59lb. Chuck roasts were $1.59lb. Bought 12lbs, took it home and ground it up myself. Made some burgers and packaged the rest for the freezer.

Didn't have everything needed to make a great burgers so we settled for just OK burgers. We didn't have any tomaters and only 3 slices of cheese. Wife and kiddos got the cheese burgers...

BTW: We do own actual plates. Just seems here lately, when I take a pic, it's always on a styrofoam plate... :D

I just picked up a larger, heavy duty grinder to replace my smaller one for sausage making. This thing ground up 25 lbs of pork in less than 10 minutes. Seems as though buying Chuck roasts is the way to go. Great lookin burgers too!

Good gosha mighty them's some good lookin' burgers!

I've had to cancel my smoke for this weekend (haven't done my EDB mods in time), so it's going to be a grill. Been thinking about strip steaks, but those pictures just swayed me over to the burger side.

What kind of bacon is that on there?

Dang I'm hungry now....

Thanks! That is just some thick sliced Wright's brand bacon on there.

Wifey and kiddos are doing the girlscout campout thing tonight, so it might be burgers again!

BTW: that fresh, course ground chuck is where the flavor is! Gonna have a hard time buying that store bought double ground mush again...

How much are we talking about to get a meat grinder? I'd love to grind my own ground chuck, and also have toyed with the idea of making my own sausage.

I've got one of the cheaper grinders from Cabela's. It normally sells for $99 I think. I at Christmas time for $49. It works great for the loads I've been doing. The few times I've made sausage, I've done from 20-50lbs and it has kept up just fine so far. Mine is an electric model, but they there are several hand operated models out there for not much $.

If you decide to get into the sausage making, and you should, be sure to check out the vertical stuffers at Northern Tool. They go on sale from time to time. I've got the 5lb model. It too works great, but I wish I had got the 15lber...

Good info as always, JamesB.

So: the ground chuck that you do is superior to the store-bought, I'm assuming?

Does the vertical stuffer work as at attachment to the grinder, or is it a stand-alone unit?

Looks real good, James. Can't beat grinding your own - did you add any spices while grinding? I'll do that sometimes, if I'm not saving any for anything else later. I cast another vote for more better than OK!
