Re: Whale steak
Bummer that it turned out poorly. It looks absolutely wonderful. I'd expect a flavor profile similar to swordfish; kinda metallic in flavor. But given the whale isn't a predatory as is the swordfish, tuna, etc. Leaves one to wonder. Lol!

It's also a mammal....and what it eats depends on the species. Huge whales eat krill; smaller ones like orca hunt for fish, seals, other forms of meat.

Yes. This was a minke whale. The only whale where some hunting is allowed. It's eating only plankton.

I know many people here that finds it good.
It may be my perception of the dish. When I see something that looks like steak I expect it to taste like steak. It just didn't fit my taste. And as OUP, either do I like fishy taste, nor from fish or other food. There was a bit of fish tast in this meat.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend tasting it if you get a chance. You may like it if you have an idea of what it tastes like upfront.
Expectations are everything! :)
Maybe it's a meat that needs more seasoning? I'd totally try some if I had the opportunity, but doubt we get whale in California.
EDIT: I googled around and it looks like the humane society folks are against whaling for food. Go figure.

Re: Whale steak
Perhaps it's a menu legend like "blowhunka" ..........pickled whale anus.
Prized among sushi enthusiasts as the "Mount Everest" of sushi.........
A 4 pound steamed whale anus served over rice.......puckered up and awaiting the eager diners.
Top level dining!
