Whale steak
Got hold of a few steaks from whale today.
Haven't eaten that since childhood and never from the grill. It's a very lean piece of meat so quick on the grill at high temp cooked to medium minus should do it.
I'm going to grill these tomorrow so pictures then.
Here's a picture from the box.

Re: Whale steak
From what I remember from my childhood it tasted a lot of fish oil. Not very good. What I've learned is that this was because of the way it was cooked. In those days whale meat was both cooked and pan fried until it was completely grey all the way through, which gave the fish oil taste.Sailor Kenshin wrote:Interesting. I will give more details tomorrow when it's eaten.

Re: Whale steak
Ok folks, her it comes.
Seasoned the meat with only salt and pepper because I didn't want to camouflage the taste.
We made some mushroom and onions, mashed potatoes with bacon, broccoli and Bearnaise sauce.
I start with the consistency which was almost like a sirloin steak, but a little softer. Some pieces was very tender other not so. It also looked like a sirloin steak.
It did not taste like a steak. I was told that you could use it as a substitute for a steak. I do not agree. It didn't taste like fish but still you could taste marine environment and marine fat, eventhough the meat was lean. I would say like a combination of sirloin and salmon !!
I will not make this again and my family agree. We've tried it and don't need to do it again. We all look forward to a real sirloin tomorrow.
Fonzie is happy. He had a feast tonight.
Here are some pictures.

Too bad about the Moby Dick Steaks but, from the looks of the sides, it appears that none of Y'all really missed the Main Course

Thanks for the interesting experiment. At least all of your side dishes look good!

Re: Whale steak
Thanks. It's not that the meat is awful.
I know many people here that finds it good.
It may be my perception of the dish. When I see something that looks like steak I expect it to taste like steak. It just didn't fit my taste. And as OUP, either do I like fishy taste, nor from fish or other food. There was a bit of fish tast in this meat.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend tasting it if you get a chance. You may like it if you have an idea of what it tastes like upfront.
I understand that catching whales is controversial many places. I haven't taken a stand on that, but the taste of meat is imo no reason for catching whales.
Spacetrucker: That bacon is the most common and probably the most sold bacon here. The pigs breed here are pretty lean compared to the standards in many countries. Actually we are exporting a lot of pigs to other countries, including the US because of the qualities of the breed.
