Dumb Question?

Postby copkid » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:26 am

After seeing so many posts about tri-tips, I'm going to call a butcher that I've dealt with before and try to order one. Do I ask for a tri-tip or can the cut go by any other names? I want to sound halfway intelligent when I try to order one!
Thanks
Laura

Aloha Laura,

I think you will like that cut of meat. Been grilling and eating that cut since my Southern California days in the '70's, but popularity has unfortunately driven up the price.

Bowhnter, mahalo for the link. The recipe shown is basic but I would leave out the MSG. :? What do you think?

take care a hui hou kakou,

Yes for sure, I don't even use that recipe, but was just showing the link for the cut...and the basics.

Here is another reference or two

Salt, pepper... maybe some garlic. That is all they need! Just be sure not to overcook!

James.

Thanks guys! It'll be interesting to see if I can get one. I've NEVER seen one around here, ever!

Aloha,

I season with Hawaiian sea salt, fresh ground black pepper and garlic. Just like how it is done in Santa Maria, California.

Of course you can use regular salt, ground pepper and garlic powderplus other spices. Matter of choice and convenience.

Traditionally it is served with "Santa Maria Style salsa, Santa Maria Style pinguito beans", macaroni and cheese plus corn tortillas.

take care a hui hou,

Montreal Steak Seasoning works pretty good for me too.

Hi Mike,

I will have to try some of the seasonings you folks use. Been "stuck" with sea salt alone or with "a lil bit of dis and a lil bit of dat" for so long. But I am willing to give a try on da uddah kind stuff! There are so many on store shelves and on the 'net that I am having a hard time finding a starting benchmark :)

When my smoker gets here I will ask for suggestions...

a hui hou,

Laura, Wish ya good luck on your search! I have asked about them around here,  is what I get. I did find a butcher at the local Brookshires that knew what they were, could order one. For around 15.00 a pound. No thanks. Good Luck.

Sounts like here. I had a butcher could order some, but it was a "case" deal I'd buy the whole case or SOL.
