First ham Ever...

Postby woodenvisions » Sun Apr 16, 2017 7:55 pm

First off, Happy Easter TBF folks!

So, all of my life I've gone ( hamless ) in the kitchen, till today. I've always been at family gatherings on Easter, so I've never prepped a Ham..
So the wifey grabbed a 1/2 bone in ham and I threw it on the Akorn for a few hrs over lump at about 300 degrees. First, I scored and speared it with whole cloves, then under foil for the first 90 minutes before the first of about 6 glaze applications.
At about 120 I unfoiled and cranked up the heat to about 450 for another 30 minutes or so, constantly brushing with the glaze, nice bark from that.

Used a mix of brown sugar, butter, spicy brown mustard, Apple cider vinegar and Dr Pepper for that.
Added some pineapple rings and cherries for the last hour of the cook.
Also made some super creamy home made mashed potatoes with whole garlic cloves, milk, garlic salt, salt, butter and ALOT of grated Parmesan cheese !
Next was parboiling peeled and chopped carrots, then in a mixture of honey, molasses, brown sugar, white wine vinegar, cumin, and Dijon mustard and onto the hot grate for 10 minutes each side.

Seems I've been missing out but next year it's back on :P :P :P

Ur too kind bsooner, I'm not sure it's worthy of that but thank you !
I was expecting something DISASTEROUS to be honest, lol.
It was pretty windy today, thought I'd be chasing temps more than my 13 month old, but both he and the Akorn proved me wrong LOL ! :P :P :P

Very good first try , glaze sounds nice. 10/10 presentation too. You deserve a beer.

Thx sailor,
We had leftovers tonight and it was just as good. Next time tho, I'll cut the ham a little thinner.
